A simple idea, but has a huge impact on the business.

Why to waste a lot of resources which includes applications, software, licenses and many more for your organization when all of these can be made available by someone who has nothing to do with your business??

Yes this can be done easily. This simple but very helpful phenomenon called the “Cloud Computing” has proved a boon in the industry for the IT Professionals. It is a promising computing technology which uses internet and central remote servers to maintain data and applications. The term “CLOUD”, actually emerged for ‘telephony’ in the telecommunication companies who offered the “Virtual Private Network” (VPN) until 1990’s, at a much lower cost. Cloud computing lengthen the margin of VPN to cover up numerous servers and network infrastructure. The cost is reduced up to a great extent. The cost of the company on the resources is considered to reduce up to 18% (from the survey conducted in September 2009). Cloud Computing supports the use of applications without being installed on one’s computer. It also allows the access to personal files from any computer with the internet facility. It has helps much more efficient computation by centralizing storage, memory and processing.

The sites providing the communication across the world using the email servers, is an excellent example for the maturity of cloud computing. The social networking sites are the birth of new generation of application for cloud computing with the vision to reach the entire population of the world in a fraction of a second.

What does a cloud enclose? A cloud client consists of computer hardware, computer software that provides application delivery. The Software as a Service (SAAS), over the internet, eliminates the need to install the application on the customer’s own computer and simplify the maintenance support. The Platform as a service (PAAS) and the Infrastructure as a service (IAAS) have helped outsourcing the task of data storage and application support. Community cloud, hybrid cloud, and private cloud are the classification of the cloud based on the use and security.

The only drawback of Cloud computing is that we cannot complete rely on a third party for dealing with sensitive data.

As said by Arthur C.Clarke “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”, is exact avowal for CLOUD COMPUTING.

The cloud apps don’t eat up your valuable IT resources, so your CFO will love it. This feature will focus on setting up more apps, new projects, and innovation.

There has been a lot of noise at IT meets on this cloud stuff.. just like 6 sigma, or TQM or blah blah blah..

To put it to real test I attended a demo by Microsoft Azure MVPs:

He didnt have answer to most pertinent question as to its reliability dynamism etc. I had very lttle convincing reasons to consider cloud for my business and that too for things which matter.

It in general works like Buy VS rent for your housing needs. If you are sane you would never like to live on rent forever. For temporary needs yes its a good solution but then all depends on the reputation of provider.
